Of the 12 Algerines commissioned by the then Royal Canadian Navy, we only have badges for 9. A letter received by Robin Allum, our Ships Visits and Museums Officer, from the Maritime Command Museum, Halifax, Nova Scotia explains why we are unlikely to get the other three.
"The Canadian navy did not have official ships' badges until 1946. Anything in use prior to then was unofficial or simply a drawing (frequently a cartoon) used on the gun shield. In 1946, the Admiralty Board recommended that all commissioned ships used a standardized pattern, consisting of a rope circle, a naval crown and heraldic design.
Border Cities, St. Boniface and Middlesex were paid off by this time and did not have badges designed for them. the other nine ships badges were designed for the ships because they were in commission for varying periods following the Second World War. They do not represent their wartime history as the navy does not back date badges.
There is no reason why you cannot use the nine badges that you have already to represent those Algerines as long as you are aware that they do not date to that period."
