The Memorial Plaque and Standard

Commemorative Plaque

Still in the area of Old Portsmouth and in St George's Church in particular, are the the wooden commemorative plaque and the standard. These are situated on the southern wall of the church together with a plaque recording the 'laying up' of the standard. The memorial plaque was produced by Stan Cheetham - J Stan Cheetham, Sig. (1944-45) SPANKER - and the inscription on this reads:

ALGERINES ASSOCIATION

REMEMBERING WITH PRIDE AND GRATITUDE THOSE MEN
WHO SERVED IN THE ALGERINE FLEET MINESWEEPERS
IN BOTH WAR AND PEACE, KEEPING THE SEAWAYS
FREE FROM DANGER AND PROTECTING OUR FISHERMEN
