"The ALGERINES ASSOCIATION wishes to express their gratitude to the NATIONAL LOTTERY for the support which enabled them to have representation, during this Celebratory Year, at the "International Festival of the Sea (IFOS)", Portsmouth, 30th June to 3rdJuly, and for the "Heroes Return" to Corfu, 26th August to the 6th September, which are hereby gratefully acknowledged." |

During this four day event our marquee was manned throughout in order to satisfy enquiries both from the general public and our own members.
Time was kept throughout the day by the ringing of 'the ship's' bell, accompanied at routine times by piped calls familiar to those who served during the period of commemoration. A call which evoked much amusement was that of 'up spirits' which attracted many responses of 'stand fast the Holy Ghost'.

VETS RETURN TO GREEK ISLANDS CRUISE.
1st Report by Bill Perry RECRUIT
A wonderful, memorable cruise and stay in Corfu. Speaking for myself and I'm sure all the lads and lassies who participated, hats off to our organiser and his mrs (George and Selina). The ship, the Emerald, owned by Thompsons was first class.
Accommodation, food, entertainment, crew - everyone from the skipper to the boys and girls who looked after us - bar staff, cabin crew etc did us proud. Nothing was too much trouble for them.
Weather hot! The trips ashore excellent, though the excursions a little pricey; we mostly hired a taxi to take a group of us, 4-8 in number, who made our own way round.
We toured the bazaars and flea markets, ladies did shopping, the lads looking for dirty postcards!! Old habits die hard! The secenary was superb with cameras working overtime. The company was great and I made a lot of new friends.
Our stay on Corfu, where we held a Sunday Church service in the Anglican Church of Corfu followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Military Cemetary.
Monday evening, our last night, we were lavishly entertained at the Greek Town Hall in company of the British Consul, Mayor and various dignitories where we were wined and dined and entertained by dancers in traditional Greek costume. This rounded off a super tour and wonderful holiday.
Thanks George and Selina.

2 nd Report by Norman Wood ROSARIO
Of those on the cruise who were not at least in their 80th year (apart from family members who came to support - in more ways than one - their Mum or Dad) two people stand out head and shoulders above the rest of us.
I refer of course to George and Selina.
George and Selina! Words do not exist to describe the work of these two people. What they did during the two weeks or so while we were travelling that truly makes the mind boggle.
One thing is certain. While most of us were sleeping 6 or 7 hours a night and, for the rest of the time were gallivanting around the Greek Islands, or enjoying the sunshine and food on board the SS Emerald, George and Selina were busy non-stop, organising, shepherding, day-to-day planning, acting as physicians and counsellors to the weaker members and holding meetings both on board with the Captain and his crew, as well as with the tour operators and local officials, including the Mayor of Corfu who organised a grand dinner party for us on our final evening.
I can't imagine how either of them found time to sleep.
My wife Elsie, summed up our thoughts when she said of George and Selina "It is around people like them that the world revolves".
God bless them both.
